A brief look at the unnatural nature of Christian hate

A brief interlude on Christianity.

Got this hate-filled screed from a “loving” Christian to my very strong atheism piece that ran in the Harrisburg Patriot-News yesterday.

Made me happier than ever that I don’t believe in an afterlife because if I had to share it with a hate-filled joyless mutant like Homer I really would be in hell.

Mr. Quarteroni,

You are to be pitied. Your denial means nothing.

You will meet God. You will one day bow at the feet of Jesus.

And for all eternity the screams of Bob Quarteroni will reverberate and go unheard in the solitary confinement of Hell.

Too late! Too late! Too late! My God, I pity you.

Happily, I got some wonderful comments from actual loving Christians on Facebook and this wonderful note from my editor, also embodying a warm, loving attitude.

I’m a Christian. It’s guys like that who put me off Christianity.

The god I believe isn’t vengeful. I’m a believer in eternal mercy, eternal forgiveness. And when you get to the other side, you’ll be judged by how kind you are; how much love you showed; and whether you leftthe world a better place for being in it. I know you think the lights just go out. And maybe you’re right. But just in case, I think you’re gonna be fine, man.

As I get older -- and I'm 70 now -- I seem to find more and more that nature is the true source of peace, inspiration and, most of all, the truth the passeth understanding. Though my knowledge is sketchy and superficial, I wanted to share it while I can.
